Ancient Mesmers likely used their lenses on their body to refract light to make it seem like a bigger “fish” was there, and lived in environments without the Gigantopredators around. This led me to the idea of the origin of my Mesmer Leviathan. They’ll actually hypnotize, and, even though the wiki didn’t directly state whether they do or not, presumably attack each other. I found a bit on the Subnautica wiki about Mesmers that I found interesting. I’d make it actually work on the players. So how would I go about making a “Mesmer Leviathan?” The answer is simple. ![]() (Barring the unfortunately close or intentionally vulnerable). ![]() Excluding the naive and oblivious, every player who gets mesmerized immediately knows what’s going on and attempts to either escape or fight back, with little emotional impact or successful attacks. ![]() There’s only one problem with them: they don’t work outside of the in-game universe. They appear in an alluring form, earn your trust, offer you a gift, and then attempt to eat and kill/maim/disfigure you. So what are the feelings evoked by the Mesmers for me? They’re manipulators. Also, while the designs are usually pretty good, I almost always feel there’s something “off” with how they look, and not in the way that would complement some thing that hypnotizes and forcibly subverts your opinion of it. I’ve seen several concepts for what’s stated above, and I love them all, but I feel they more fit “Yeah, this is what a related species of the Mesmers would act like,” than the actual feelings evoked (in my mind, at least) by these little polychromatic not-fish. This hypnosis leaves the player in a confused state for some amount of time, during which the function of the Compass and HUD elements are impaired, and audio is distorted. The Lily Paddler is capable of a form of defensive hypnosis that it will use on the player if they approach, causing them to lose control of their movement and be reoriented against their will, similar to the Mesmer though nonaggressive. The body ends with a slender tail, terminating in a broad, pale-green tail fin. The underside of the body features two long arms ending with small claws, seemingly capable of grasping objects and bringing them to the mouthparts, but ill-suited for defense. ![]() The main section of the body has a large hump, of which the top is beige and has two large black stalks dotted with bright white spots and splitting into four long, striated fins each bearing a bright orange spot with a dark circle in the middle, similar in color to their eyestalks. Each having three pink leaf-shaped structures at the top and a smaller green leaf at the base, with three additional pairs appearing on the tail portion of the body. On the underside of the head three black mandibles are situated around a small circular mouth.Ī pair of long stalks are attached to the upper half of the head. Two pairs of green stalks protrude from either side of the head and are tipped with spherical orange eyes with darker orange sclerae. The head is flattened and almost octagonal in shape. A long, beige crest runs down the middle of the head, protruding slightly above the surface of the head and dividing the head into two clear halves. It is large in size and has a predominantly blue body accented with purple and beige. The Lily Paddler has a rather flamboyant appearance, decorated with several brightly coloured fins.
